The Iraq You Never See on TV

(Above) Kids in Fallulujah, protected from terrorist mass-murderers by U.S. Marines and Iraqi soldiers. You can read the whole story by Stephen Deboard (USMC) in Michael Yon's online magazine. Here's what Deboard says about the Marine in Fallulujah: "It’s simply amazing what these young men are doing. They’re living on military rations and fatty, junky muffins but still try to maintain a basic level of fitness. They’re showering with city water, which is essentially coming straight out of the Euphrates. Bathroom breaks are conducted in tents and tubes, and laundry is done in a bucket with a scrub brush with whatever soap they can find. It is a very, very spartan existence, but these warriors are holding themselves to the standard the American people hold them to. They are honorable; they are respectful but firm; cautious but friendly; young but filled with a worldly maturity that indicates they know exactly what the stakes are here."

This remarkable photograph from Iraq is copyright 2007 by Michael Yon, a former soldier who blogs from war zones in Iraq. Here's how he describes the scene that he calls "Thanks and Praise": "I photographed men and women, both Christians and Muslims, placing a cross atop the St. John’s Church in Baghdad. They had taken the cross from storage and a man washed it before carrying it up to the dome. A Muslim man had invited the American soldiers from “Chosen” Company 2-12 Infantry to the church, where I videotaped as Muslims and Christians worked and rejoiced at the reopening of St John’s, an occasion all viewed as a sign of hope. The Iraqis asked me to convey a message of thanks to the American people. ” Thank you, thank you,” the people were saying. One man said, “Thank you for peace.” Another man, a Muslim, said “All the people, all the people in Iraq, Muslim and Christian, is brother.” The men and women were holding bells, and for the first time in memory freedom rang over the ravaged land between two rivers." Please visit Michael's site at: http://michaelyon-online.com/. I'm sure many of you will want to help fund his efforts to present The Real Story of what's occurring in Iraq. He's a remarkable writer -- and perhaps even better as a photographer.

Why am I not surprised I haven't seen this before? In fact I haven't heard anything about Iraq from the media in the last few months, which causes me to deduce that things are going much better.

Dear Christopher and James: You're two of my all-time favorites in the blogosphere. As Christopher indicates, in the eyes of the MSM, good news about Iraq isn't news. So, we're getting very little news about the many successes we've experienced there under the Petraeus strategy. Interestingly enough, the politician who proposed the best strategy -- the troop surge -- was John McCain, who was written off for dead by most pundits and now is in second place nationally.

Thank you for the photos, Steve. I rarely comment on the war as I feel I don't ever have a good handle on what is actually going on over there. These photos prove my theory. Being so uninformed (and misinformed) of the realities of Iraq, we must do our best to put put decent and honorable people in leadership roles to do what is best for us all.

Trish, perhaps surprisingly, I don't comment on the war a lot myself. I have strong views on the need to support our soldiers and to understand that 99% of them are decent, honorable, valorous people. To me, reading Michael Yon, who is now a civilian but regularly risks his life, is a revelation about how wonderful our soldiers are. Many of them strike me as similar in views and actions to our beloved Sarah Heath Palin. I'll be writing more about Sarah near the end of November and into December. I believe Sarah will someday be President -- and a great one. Your efforts, along with many other people, are helping to make that a reality.

I wanted to stop by and thank you for co-signing the Guest Post to the McCain Blog. You have probably already received an e-mail about it but in case not, we have launched www.mccain08osm.com I hope you will stop by, take a look and leave any comments or suggestions you might have.

Hi Brad: I recommend that everyone who recognizes what a great American hero John McCain is visit the site you mentioned. I sent you an e-mail giving you my thoughts on ways individuals can leverage their personal support for a candidate. I hope you pass it on to your fellow McCanites -- and everyone else that wants to play an influential role in American politics. Please keep spreading the good word about Wm. Russell as he takes on "The Prince of Pork."
