"GOP Leaders Warn of Election Disaster — Shell-shocked House Republicans got warnings from leaders past and present Tuesday: Your party’s message isn’t good enough to prevent disaster in November, and neither is the NRCC’s [National Republican Congressional Committee's] money. The Republican brand has been so badly damaged that if Republicans try to run an anti-Obama or anti-Rev. Wright campaign, they are simply going to fail. More… (US Elections 2008)"
The article's message is either poppycock or balderdash. I haven't figured out which. A candidate's "brand" is not the Party. Rather, it is the candidate herself or himself. Also, if those supposed "leaders" had done a better job leading, well, things would be better.
If our “leaders” (former and present) are people like Don Young (political architect of the “Bridge to Nowhere”), Tom DeLay, Mark Foley, Newt-of-many-wives and Tom Reynolds (who had to spend $5.2 million to get reelected in a solidly Republican district), well we can live without leaders like them.
The real leaders of the Republican Party are people like Bonnie West of Washington, PA, Sharon Caliendo of Norman, Oklahoma, Adam Brickley of Colorado Springs, and Brad Marston of Boston, Massachusetts. They’re out there this year – as in the past – busting their butts to send great candidates to Washington, DC. You’ve never heard of them perhaps, but you’ve seen the political fruits of their labors.
Political operative Sharon Caliendo is one of the main reasons Oklahoma's Dr. Tom Coburn is in the U.S. Senate – and not back practicing gynecology. Adam Brickley almost single-handedly engineering the rise of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to national prominence and vice-presidential consideration. Brad Marston helped resuscitate what appeared to be the stone-dead campaign of John McCain. Bonnie West has been a key factor in revitalizing the Republican Party in a critical area of western Pennsylvania.
I wouldn’t trade one of them for four Tom DeLays.There's much hand-wringing lately over the loss of Republican candidate Woody Jenkins in a supposedly "safe" election in Louisiana. As Karl Rove put it Tuesday night, "Look, Woody Jenkins [who's lost more elections than Britney Spears has misplaced underwear] is a fine man, but he's terrible candidate." I support only exceptional candidates.
As for Woody's loss, the best way to get candidates for congressional races is NOT to "round up all the usual suspects." Instead, get people who have great integrity and a real passion for the voters of their district. They usually win – later if not sooner.
Long-time readers will know that I regularly rage against the NRCC for not giving Diana Irey a dime. She was the Republican candidate who ran so ferociously and well against “The Prince of Pork,” John Murtha. It can be a thankless task running against someone like Murtha who has sold his soul to every lobbyist with a bag-full of cash.
Diana raised $856,000 on her own. She got contributions from all 50 states. Her total number of contributors was 7,000 – significantly more than Murtha’s total, although he had many more large donors. Many of those who donated to Diana’s campaign were giving money for the first time to a political candidate.
The Diana Lynn Ireys of the world are the future of the Republican Party. She is a rock of integrity, a devoted Christian who has “a love affair with humanity.” She’s teenie (5 foot, 100 pounds) but as an orator she outdoes Barack Obama.
At the same time Diana was getting zip from the national Republican establishment, Mark Foley – prior to the nasty e-mails scandal – had accumulated a campaign war chest of, oh, $2 million. I assume Mark was not one of the “leaders” cited by Politico.com.
How can good Republican candidates – in spite of Politco’s ominous message – win this year? A while back, Sharon Caliendo sent me her analysis of how Mary Fallin, a congresswoman from the Oklahoma City area (5th district) won.
Some people, even the brilliant Michael Barone, portray Mary’s district as a Republican “slam-dunk.” But is it really? In fact, the district is two-third white – and one-third other. In fact, it sounds suspiciously like one of those districts where Democrats run unopposed election cycle after election cycle.
Sharon said that Mary went door-to-door month after month. She wore out several pairs of shoes. She raised a good deal of money, mainly because she would not take “no” for an answer. She ended up winning by 60% to 37% in what was supposedly (and actually) a horrible year for Republicans.
I am working very hard to ensure that John McCain wins the 21 electoral votes of Pennsylvania, which probably will ensure that he wins the presidency.
I’m also doing everything in my power to ensure that Melissa Hart wins back her congressional seat in western Pennsylvania, that Toni Gilhooley wins her uphill battle in Harrisburg and parts east, and that Marina Kats defeats the indescribably awful Allyson Schwartz in Montgomery County and Northeast Philadelphia. I’m also supporting Michael Livingston in a very difficult race in Philadelphia.
These three women will come nowhere near outspending their opponents, but they will outwork them and outsmart them. Gee, what do we have to do to restore the Republican “brand?” We need to go out with superior candidates – like Melissa, Toni, Michael, and Marina – and advance the process of winning elections.
Sharon Caliendo sent the following comment about the NRCC: "There was another seat that they wasted tons of money on before this one too. I want to go back to the days where we supported our Congressional candidates and not an organization like the NRCC that plays favorites. Campaigns were less expensive then too and the candidates elected were not beholding to the powers at be at NRCC."

McCain's Election Depends on YOU

John McCain's victory -- in your precinct, state, and country -- depends largely on people exactly like you. During the time between now and the General Election (November 4, 2008), I'll discuss ways that average Americans (and above-average Americans) can help ensure that John McCain becomes the next President of the U.S. Here are some basic steps you can take:
Tell your friends and family members that you're strongly backing John McCain -- something that will make them more likely to do so. You can do this face-to-face or through e-mails;

MCCAIN: OBAMA'S "AUDACITY OF HYPOCRISY"

I've been writing on my blog about what McCain can expect, not only from Moveon.Org but also from Obama. In fact, Barack Obama is NOT prepared to lead the USA and Sen. McCain should stop saying that he is. I respect John McCain's desire to conduct a "respectful" campaign, but that is not going to be possible, much as it would be desirable.
I told Patrick Hynes (I'll send my comments to you) that I expected Moveon, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Obama Campaign, to put up ads such as, "McCain: War Hero or Warmonger."
In the 2006 election, Democrat 527s and the Democrat Congressional Committee portrayed my friend Congresswoman Melissa Hart as a thief ("caught redhanded!"). Melissa is one of the most honest and ethical people on God's own green earth.

Another big “oops” for Sen. Barack Obama.
This morning on the “Today” Show, Barack Obama continued his dishonest attacks by actually claiming he never leveled the dishonest attack that John McCain supports a 100-year war in Iraq. In his book The Audacity of Hope, Obama writes that voters are “tired of distortion, name-calling, and sound bite solutions to complicated problems.” This is exactly the opposite of what Obama offered this morning.

On Obama: he has continued to falsify Sen. McCain's remarks about the "100 years" in Iraq. McCain made a mistake in giving Obama this kind of opening, and it demonstrates that John McCain overestimates the character of Barack Obama. Read Obama's "Dreams From My Father." The man makes comments about white people, including his mother and grandparents, that are right out of Rev. Wright's playbook.
Since Obama basically has no legislative record, he is running a race based on "character" and "judgment." On Obama's judgment, Sen. McCain has talked about the "audacity of hypocrisy." A man who is a hypocrite does not have a good character, and Sen. McCain needs to acknowledge this -- at least in his own mind if he doesn't state it publicly.
Some weeks ago, Senator McCain went "across the aisle" to say hello to Barack Obama. Apparently, Sen. McCain was all smiles, joshing with Obama and patting him on the back. Yes, this is reflective of the Senator's human decency, but it may show some naivete about Obama's character, which I believe is largely non-existent.
Brad, you have an access to the McCain Campaign that I don't, so I hope you'll present my views. I'm not trying to turn John McCain into a political rottweiler, but I do hope he will recognize some sobering truths about his opponent.
Right now, I'm watching the Patraeus/Crocker hearings on TV. I see Democratic Senators, including Mrs. Clinton, who are willing to endanger American soldiers -- and the American people -- in order to advance their political ambitions. I think Sen. McCain knows this is the case, but he is reluctant to admit it. He doesn't have to make these facts the centerpiece of his speeches, but he does need to understand them.

Another big “oops” for Sen. Barack Obama.
This morning on the “Today” Show, Barack Obama continued his dishonest attacks by actually claiming he never leveled the dishonest attack that John McCain supports a 100-year war in Iraq. In his book The Audacity of Hope, Obama writes that voters are “tired of distortion, name-calling, and sound bite solutions to complicated problems.” This is exactly the opposite of what Obama offered this morning.

On Obama: he has continued to falsify Sen. McCain's remarks about the "100 years" in Iraq. McCain made a mistake in giving Obama this kind of opening, and it demonstrates that John McCain overestimates the character of Barack Obama. Read Obama's "Dreams From My Father." The man makes comments about white people, including his mother and grandparents, that are right out of Rev. Wright's playbook.
Since Obama basically has no legislative record, he is running a race based on "character" and "judgment." On Obama's judgment, Sen. McCain has talked about the "audacity of hypocrisy." A man who is a hypocrite does not have a good character, and Sen. McCain needs to acknowledge this -- at least in his own mind if he doesn't state it publicly.
Some weeks ago, Senator McCain went "across the aisle" to say hello to Barack Obama. Apparently, Sen. McCain was all smiles, joshing with Obama and patting him on the back. Yes, this is reflective of the Senator's human decency, but it may show some naivete about Obama's character, which I believe is largely non-existent.
Brad, you have an access to the McCain Campaign that I don't, so I hope you'll present my views. I'm not trying to turn John McCain into a political rottweiler, but I do hope he will recognize some sobering truths about his opponent.
Right now, I'm watching the Patraeus/Crocker hearings on TV. I see Democratic Senators, including Mrs. Clinton, who are willing to endanger American soldiers -- and the American people -- in order to advance their political ambitions. I think Sen. McCain knows this is the case, but he is reluctant to admit it. He doesn't have to make these facts the centerpiece of his speeches, but he does need to understand them.

He has many such people now, and he needs more. People with Internet talents, speechwriters (hint: me), and GOTV types are going to be essential in this campaign. We need a Joe Trippi type or two, although without Joe's dismaying politics. Moveon.org will attack John from the left and -- believe it or not -- from the right. They will do anything in their power to deny him votes. McCain needs FEMALE veterans to get out front advocating his campaign. He needs Hispanics from Arizona and Texas to endorse him -- he won big with the Hispanic vote in the last Senate campaign. He even carried Apache County, which is unheard of for Republicans. Another very important point: Right now, he needs the endorsement of Gov. Sarah Palin, the nation's most popular elected official.

We need a Joe Trippi type or two, although without Joe's dismaying politics. Moveon.org will attack John from the left and -- believe it or not -- from the right. They will do anything in their power to deny him votes. McCain needs FEMALE veterans to get out front advocating his campaign. He needs Hispanics from Arizona and Texas to endorse him -- he won big with the Hispanic vote in the last Senate campaign. He even carried Apache County, which is unheard of for Republicans. Another very important point: Right now, he needs the endorsement of Gov. Sarah Palin, the nation's most popular elected official.

McCain: Urgent Need for Donations
Thanks to the many recent visitors from Alaska -- including several visits from my favorite town of Wasilla. Other Alaskans during the past 24 hours have come from Soldotna (gotta look that one up), Juneau, Fairbanks, and several from Anchorage. My friend Adam at Draft Palin for VP tells me many bloggers are signing up to support Gov. Sarah Heath Palin, who's featured this week in Alaska magazine and in Vogue. You've come a long way Sarah, but my hunch is that you're going right to the top of the political mountain.
Today, I received the following message from Bard Marston, a Massachusetts-based volunteer for Senator John McCain. Brad's efforts were vital in the Senator's winning the NH and SC primaries. As Super Tuesday (Feb. 25) approaches, the Senator needs contributions that will enable him to make media "buys" in critical states. I donated $50 today to the Senator, and I hope you'll consider doing likewise. Thanks.

POLITICAL ACTIVISTS DOING "THE WAVE"
If you're a sports fan, you know about -- and probably have participated -- in something called "The Wave." It's a sports phenomenon that has significant political implications.The Wave occurs when people throughout the stadium – section by section -- stand up and raise their arms. The effect is to make tens of thousands of people behave in a way that resembles the rise and fall of an ocean wave.
It sounds like an exercise in silliness, but increasingly researchers studying human behavior and leaders have studied The Wave. They believe that it exemplifies a situation where the actions of the few – the people who start The Wave – end up influencing the behavior of the many – nearly everyone else.
To perceptive researchers, that sounds suspiciously like something similar to management and leadership. In fact, The Wave is a metaphor for those things.
Leadership -- in society, business, and politics -- means getting people to act spontaneously to influence others. It also means having them work in concert to achieve an end. The Wave occurs because people want to do something that helps the home team win.
In politics, “the home team” is a candidate who wants to win and needs popular support to do so.The Wave occurs when a few people start a movement. Quickly, people throughout the stadium being reacting in the same way – and influencing the actions of others near them. Soon, the people throughout a stadium are moving in unison.
Recently, I’ve written about a number of “wave-makers” who are assisting in the Russell Campaign. One of them is Pennsylvanian Melanie, a highly social and insightful restaurant worker. There's also Cindy (S.J. Reidhead) in New Mexico, who posts on the extremely popular site named ThePinkFlamingo. She's a professional writer who has a huge following and is directing many people to Russell's web site.
Another one is "Samantha West," a businesswoman who lives in Texas and is vigorously raising funds for Russell. Also, there’s “Jenn of the Jungle,” a Californian with a popular show on BlogTalkRadio and someone who recently interviewed William Russell. Douglas Gibbs of Political Pistachio radio has strongly supported Russell and had him on his show. As you've probably noticed, I'm a Pennsylvanian trying to "Make Waves for Russell."
Another extremely important figure in the Russell camp is Brad Marston from Massachusetts. He’s devoting most of his current energy to supporting John McCain’s effort to win the Republican presidential nomination – but he’s also a solid supporter of Russell.
The following is an e-mail Brad recently sent to "1,000 of his closest (political) friends":"Political muscle is built by talking to one person at a time. That is why I am reaching out to you today. This e-mail is going out to over 1000 people because I talked to 10 people who in turn, talked to ten more people. Help us make it 10,000 people simply by forwarding it on to your friends, family and contacts."
"So, 'What have you done today to make you feel proud?' It is a line from one of my favorite songs, 'Proud.' Another lyric is 'We need a change...Do it today...I can feel my spirit rising!' I think that says it perfectly. We do need a change."
"To make it happen, we need you to JOIN US ! We need you to DONATE , whether it be time, talent money or some combination thereof! Let's all end each day knowing 'I did something for the future of this nation I love so much. I did what I could to elect John McCain and I am proud of that.' If you can do that, I would be both proud and grateful. And so will the hundreds, perhaps thousands more who join us."
