In a week devoted to America's veterans, let's not forget Air Force Academy graduate Heather Wilson, who's running for the U.S. Senate in New Mexico -- possibly against Gov. Bill Richardson. You can support Heather, the first female veteran ever elected to Congress, by going to her web site: http://heatherforsenate.com/. If you can contribute as little as $25.00, that would help her campaign get off to a running start. Heather is one of the "selected" candidates on this web site, along with William Trower Russell (PA, opposing John Murtha), Melissa Hart (PA, opposing Jason Altmire), Jean Schmidt (Ohio, the congresswoman who called Murtha a "coward" -- and correctly so), and Sarah Palin (Alaska Governor, a candidate for the vice-presidential nomination and ultimately for the presidency). In the case of Heather, she's an American Warrior with a great national future, and so the Democrats pour money into campaigns trying to defeat her. They've failed so far.
Stay tuned for the $9.11 and $20.01 (9/11/2001) efforts to raise William enough money to beat Murtha. If you want to 'jump the gun" and contribute now, you can do so here.
The vast majority of Americans "support our troops." One of the best ways to support our fighting men and women is to vote for candidates who have served in Iraq and who understand the threats posed by Islamic fascists. You can get a good sense of what's going on in Iraq by reading Michael Yon's blog and by going to the site of William Russell. He needs your support, including your contributions, so he can mount an effective, winning campaign against John Murtha, someone who doesn't support our troops and thus has no right to be in Congress.
In addition to making financial contributions, large or small, you can help William by asking people in the 12th Congressional District of Pennsylvania (Johnstown, Monongahela, Washington, and Greene County) to support him. In so doing, please emphasize how William's programs strengthen national security and emphasize real economic development, rather than government handouts and make work projects.
In the US currently, there are 25 million veterans, including William Russell and his campaign manager, Larry Stiles, a former Marine. If only 1% -- 250,000 -- of American veterans were to contribute an average of $10 to the Russell effort, he would have more than enough money to wage a winning campaign. Please go to his web site and make a donation now!
John Murtha, in his condemnations of the Haditha Marines, has basically accused American military personnel of war crimes. You can find the real story of the Marines -- and their heroism at Haditha -- by going to this news story.
Please remember that when you are making your choice for Congress. Murtha's deal-making and demagoguery make him unfit to serve. If you want to learn more about Murtha, go the web site specifically dedicated to his defeat. Enough is enough!
If you want to find out what groups are pouring money into Murtha's campaign, go to Open Secrets, which contains that information. Then, call up these companies and tell them what you think about their cynical misuse of tax dollars. It's just not right for them to get hundreds of millions in your tax money and then use a chunk of it to finance someone with the poor character of John Murtha. Don't let them get away with it.
Note: Scroll down for revealing photos from Iraq and columns on what William Russell stands for and how he can win. Your comments are always welcome. In the previous columns, you can read William's stirring message of thanks and admiration for Viet Nam veterans.

The Iraq You Never See on TV

(Above) Kids in Fallulujah, protected from terrorist mass-murderers by U.S. Marines and Iraqi soldiers. You can read the whole story by Stephen Deboard (USMC) in Michael Yon's online magazine. Here's what Deboard says about the Marine in Fallulujah: "It’s simply amazing what these young men are doing. They’re living on military rations and fatty, junky muffins but still try to maintain a basic level of fitness. They’re showering with city water, which is essentially coming straight out of the Euphrates. Bathroom breaks are conducted in tents and tubes, and laundry is done in a bucket with a scrub brush with whatever soap they can find. It is a very, very spartan existence, but these warriors are holding themselves to the standard the American people hold them to. They are honorable; they are respectful but firm; cautious but friendly; young but filled with a worldly maturity that indicates they know exactly what the stakes are here."

This remarkable photograph from Iraq is copyright 2007 by Michael Yon, a former soldier who blogs from war zones in Iraq. Here's how he describes the scene that he calls "Thanks and Praise": "I photographed men and women, both Christians and Muslims, placing a cross atop the St. John’s Church in Baghdad. They had taken the cross from storage and a man washed it before carrying it up to the dome. A Muslim man had invited the American soldiers from “Chosen” Company 2-12 Infantry to the church, where I videotaped as Muslims and Christians worked and rejoiced at the reopening of St John’s, an occasion all viewed as a sign of hope. The Iraqis asked me to convey a message of thanks to the American people. ” Thank you, thank you,” the people were saying. One man said, “Thank you for peace.” Another man, a Muslim, said “All the people, all the people in Iraq, Muslim and Christian, is brother.” The men and women were holding bells, and for the first time in memory freedom rang over the ravaged land between two rivers." Please visit Michael's site at: http://michaelyon-online.com/. I'm sure many of you will want to help fund his efforts to present The Real Story of what's occurring in Iraq. He's a remarkable writer -- and perhaps even better as a photographer.
Please read the pieces below on William Russell's inspiring campaign to unseat John Murtha in PA's 12th Congressional District. William needs and deserves your support.
Today, I received the following message from Larry Stiles, a former Marine (VietNam era) and campaign manager for William Russell: "Dear Friend:William Russell has filed his Statement of Candidacy last Thursday tochallenge Congressman Murtha. Mr. Russell will be formally announcing in a12th Congressional District RV tour on Monday, November 19. We invite you toride with us and have an opportunity to discuss the campaign with Mr.Russell. William Russell's Salute to Viet Nam Veterans

Alaska Gov. Sarah Heath Palin, mother of infantryman Track Palin, with Vietnam Vets.
Iraqi Girl: Who exactly are we fighting for? I believe we're fighting for her.

Soldiers are tough guys . . . who love children. Thanks to milblogger Michael Yon's site for this great picture, and for the one in the column below: http://michaelyon.blogspot.com/. "Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not, for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven." And why is it again that you NEVER see such pictures on the MSM?
Note: Every visitor to this site is cordially invited to visit one of my other sites, which you can find at: http://livebetteronless.blogspot.com. It's about making our lives better by spending less and enjoying life more. The subjects will be: personal economics, retirement plans, and lifestyle improvements. Comments are welcome. Over time, the site will develop into a book about "The Good Life."
Below is a message from Lt. Col. (Ret.) William Trower Russell about Vietnam Veterans. Please send this to everyone on your e-mail list who might be interested (which might be just about everyone). Also, if you have a blog or other web site, please feel fit to reprint it.
In honor of Veteran’s Day, I would like to pay tribute to the Vietnam Vets out there who are turning the tide in the current war against Islamic Radicalism. Please pass this along.
Vietnam Veterans: Turning the Tide in the War Against Islamic Radicalism.
They come wearing motorcycle leather and business suits. They sport crew cuts and ponytails, some wearing long un-trimmed beards, others clean shaven. They park their Harley’s, Gold Wings, and three wheelers in rows flying the Stars and Strips and the black POW/MIA flags. Many bear scars and tattoos commemorating their service in Vietnam.
They often come to stand guard over the memorial bearing the names of their comrades who fell during the long years of their generation’s war to prevent the anti-war protesters of today’s struggle from defacing it, again.
Upon meeting veterans of the current war against Radical Islam, many of whom are young enough to be their grandsons, they wrap them in bear hugs and say “Welcome Home, Brother.”They are now the older brothers of our Brotherhood of Arms.
These are the men who so many of my generation looked up to as the heroes who were betrayed. They fought an unpopular and ugly war that did have a purpose in the world wide struggle against communism, against an enemy who remained faceless in the jungles of a far off land. But that purpose is so often hidden or disregarded in the movies, history books, and writings since.
They bear the unseen scars of coming home from their war only to be welcomed in San Francisco and New York and many college campuses with protests and taunts of “Baby Killer!” and “Murderer.” The anger of having one of the most famous starlets of their generation go to the home of the enemy they were fighting and provide aid and encouragement to that enemy runs deep. The hurt of having one who stood among their ranks for a short period of time, sit before the Congressional Committees and lie about atrocities they did not commit, be rewarded with election to the United States Congress and Senate and a run for the highest office of this land, runs deeper.
The fruits of their spilled blood, lost brethren, and military victories against the communists in the TET Offensive of 1968 (when they effectively destroyed the Viet Cong), the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) led Offensive in 1972 (when they destroyed the offensive capability of the NVA) were lost to the political defeats here at home which led to the fall of Saigon in 1975.
The anti-war movement, combined with the fall out of the Watergate scandal led to the election of a strong anti-war Democratic majority in the House and Senate in 1974. Those majorities cut off all funding to the South Vietnamese government and prevented any reinforcement by American forces.
The results were the footage of American Marines pushing back the last hopeful refugees atop the US Embassy building in Saigon as the last helicopter headed out to sea, the imprisonment of hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese in “re-education camps,” the flotillas of millions of “boat people,” and the murder of millions more in the killing fields of Cambodia.
But once again, the real heroes of that generation are stepping up and are looking out for their little Brothers and Sisters who are fighting in a far off land.
They know this enemy here at home and they are watching the backs of their younger siblings. They are not allowing this anti-war movement to go unanswered. They are stepping up to speak the truth about the self described “heroes” of their generation, and prevented one from becoming President. They are standing on street corners near Walter Reed, in West Chester, PA and Berkley, CA to counter Code Pink and other anti-war protesters. They form the core of groups like the Patriot Guard Riders, who ride in processions to welcome home the fallen and protect their families from the most despicable of anti-war protesters who show up at the funerals.
The Free Republic “Freepers” stand vigil outside Walter Reed to cheer our Wounded Warriors on Friday nights to let them know the Code Pink protesters across the street do not speak for the people of this nation. The Gathering of Eagles organizes pro-troop counter protests to the anti-war protesters and stand toe to toe with them.
Then there are the motorcycle clubs like the Rolling Thunder and the Nam Knights who stand vigil over the memorials to prevent further defacement and insults to their fallen brothers and sisters. And there are the USO volunteers who greet service men and women returning from overseas at airports across the country to let them know they are appreciated.
Their war was lost to the betrayal of so-called peaceniks, who by design or default, played into the hands of the enemy and gave away victory. They will not allow the terrible results of such a betrayal to be visited on their younger Brothers and Sisters. So they come and they stand for them on the National Mall with Gold Star Parents and Spouses among their ranks, where our Soldiers in uniform cannot show up to face down the anarchists, socialists, and misguided angels of the “peace” movement.
They welcome us home with cheers, hugs, goody-bags, and tears at Atlanta, Dallas, San Francisco, and Baltimore and so many other airports. They send letters and care packages to our Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen at sea and in hostile theaters. They fly the Stars and Stripes proudly and will not stand by idly to watch it burned. Finally, they pray for victory and safe return of the new generations of Warriors.
The Veterans of Vietnam are ensuring the safety our nation and its soldiers in the current fight by not allowing this war to be lost at home. As the current generation fights to protect our nation from physical attack, the Vietnam Veterans are engaged in the struggle for our nation’s heart and soul, and they are turning the tide.
Just as my older Brothers in Arms welcomed me and so many of my Brothers and Sisters of my generation home, I want to say to them as individuals and as a group: “Thank you for being home, Brother, and watching over me.”

William Russell is a veteran of the Operation Iraqi Freedom, Desert Storm, and the Pentagon on 9/11. He recently left Active Duty with the Army to run against John Murtha in Pennsylvania.
Reach him at: http://williamrussellforcongress.com/.
Note from Steve Maloney: As I suggested above, please send William's message to every American who loves this country and is committed to preserving it. One important thing you can do right now is to go to William's web site and make a contribution, be it small or large. Do what you can do to end the travesty of having a disloyal individual like John Murtha "serving" in Congress. In fact, Murtha serves himself, and William Russell serves the warriors and heroes of this nation. John Murtha has sold his political soul to the highest bidders. William has not and will sell out. Help him in any way you can!

Campaign "Secrets" To Help Your Candidate WIN!
American soldiers in Iraq, helping their fellow man.
To be specific, how can someone like Lt. Col. William Russell win against a well-financed, well-known candidate like John Murtha?
First, have your supporters learn from the example of Republican candidates who've beaten well-known, powerful figures in the past. For example, check out the methods used by John Thune in defeating Tom Daschle in the South Dakota Senate race. Also, google the race between winning Republican George Nethercutt and powerful congressman Tom Foley in Oregon. In previous columns, I've discussed the brilliant campaign conducted by Christy Whitman against Bill Bradley, where she spent less than one-tenth as much as Senator Bradley -- and came within two points of beating him. A key to Rick Santorum's winning a seat in Congress nearly two decades ago against entrenched Democrat Doug Walgren was going door-to-door in areas where support for Walgren was "soft."
The reality is that many people believe their one vote doesn't have much of an effect on elections. However, if they manage to convince 19 other people to vote for your candidate, then you might as well have 20 votes. Get 500 people thinking that way, and the number of "influence votes" add up to 10,000, which may just be enough to win a contested election.
Second, tell your supporters you won't concede votes to the Democrats, including those of minorities and union members. Seize any opportunity to talk to members of such groups -- and ask for their help. Recently, the head of the national Machinists Union noted that 35% of the members of that union were registered Republican. A serious candidate for a federal or state office should set a goal of getting 25% of minority votes (instead of the usual 8%-10%) and nearly half the votes of union
members.
Third, ask your supporters to contribute money -- with the emphasis on small donations. In the U.S., fewer than 3% of voters actually make such donations. Ask every supporter for a contribution, even if it's only a few dollars.
Fourth, get your supporters to leverage their influence. They can do so by contacting 10 or 20 or 30 friends to support your candidate. Give them a short, compelling reason for doing so. True, everyone has only one vote, but all of us can exert influence on family, friends, and neighbors.
Fifth, explain to your supporters exactly what you'd like them to do. Such activities may include activities like: putting up yard signs, making phone calls, going door-to-door in their neighborhood, writing e-mails to people who may be enthusiastic about your candidate.
In the case of William Russell, the 80,000 votes Diana Irey got in 2006 against Murtha is the Base. He will need an additional 25,000-plus votes, many of them basically taken away from Murtha.
That's enough for now. There will be more to come!

Huckabee-McCain or McCain-Huckabee? Not Likely
One of Brad's readers at Azamatteroffact said: (1) he expects Mike Huckabee to win the Iowa primary; (2) he believes Huckabee can win the nomination; (3) he and his friend like either a Huckabee-McCain ticket or a McCain-Huckabee. The following is my response:
The national polls will have some influence on who wins Iowa, which is not exactly a representative state for Republicans. Of the people in Iowa who identify themselves as Republicans, fully 39% see themselves as evangelical Christians (roughly the same percentage as SC). In NH, the number who identify themselves that way adds up to only 10%, which is a major reason Mike is so far behind in the Granite State.
The problem for Mike is that once he gets out of the South (and certain sections of the Midwest, the percentage of evangelical Christian Republicans is rather low. Right now, I don't see how Mike could get the nomination.
To do so, he must WIN -- in several states. Right now, he doesn't look like a winner in any of early primary states, with the possible exception of Iowa. He will not do well in NH and his chances don't look good in MI or FL. After that, it's Super Tuesday, and among those states, it appears he's only ahead in AR.
But I guess it's not a good udea to count the votes before they get cast.
I can't imagine McCain, at his age, taking the VP slot. I continue to prefer Gov. Sarah Palin over all other possibilities for the Vice-Presidential slot.

John McCain, William Russell & "Conventional Wisdom"
Some of my favorite people online (two mentioned below) are strong supporters of the presidential candidacy of Senator John McCain. Early in the game, I endorsed Rudy Giuliani for President, but I continue to have tremendous admiration for McCain. The following is a message I wrote to Brad Marston, whose Azamatteroffact blog is listed on the right under the logo that says "I Vote the Elephant." The columns below this one mainly deal with Lt. Col. Russell's campaign against John Murtha.
John McCain proves a point that I deeply believe in: that money doesn't mean nearly as much as some "experts" think. Of course, everyone has kept dismissing McCain because he's supposedly "broke," he has continued to move up in the polls. So much for conventional wisdom. As someone who has a long history in practical politics, I deeply believe that if a national candidate has 100 Brad Marstons and Patrick Hynes, he probably has a good chance to win. I'm writing regularly about steps another good candidate, William Russell, who's opposing John Murtha, can win a race that many "experts" think is unwinnable.
A lot of McCain advisers would benefit from reading some of the pieces I've written about Christine Todd Whitman, who almost beat supposedly unbeatable Bill Bradley in 1990. He spent more than 10 times as much money as she did, and he won by a measly 2 points in a "Blue" state. She established the foundation for a great political career at basically the same time as she ended his presidential aspirations.
With the rise of cable and the Internet, the need to spend a gazillion dollars on TV commercials has faded. Again, the "conventional wisdom" is much more conventional than it is wise. It could very well be that the Republican race could come down to a battle between Giuliani and McCain. I wouldn't be completely surprised if McCain won the nomination.

John McCain proves a point that I deeply believe in: that money doesn't mean nearly as much as some "experts" think. I wouldn't be completely surprised if McCain won the nomination.

KEY MEETING OF WILLIAM RUSSELL WITH SUPPORTERS!
NOTE: If you listened to Eric Dondero's "Libertarian Republican" radio show, and you're looking for Steve Maloney, you came to the right place. I have several columns about William Russell.
You can find congressional candidate William Russell's web site, where you can learn, volunteer, and -- hopefully -- contribute at: http://williamrussellforcongress.com. Note below the important meeting at Russell Headquarters in Johnstown, PA.
Thanks to Eric Dondero for having me on his show! Tune in to Libertarian Republican Radio as often as you can.
Finally, If you heard Adam Brickley (and me) rave about the qualities of Alaska's Governor Sarah Heath Palin on Eric's show and you'd like to learn more about her, please go Adam's site at: http://palinforvp.blogspot.com/
There will be an important meeting of William Russell, opponent of John Murtha, and his campaign manager, Larry Stiles with supporters from Pennsylvania and elsewhere. Here's the notice from Iraqi Freedom veteran Craig Minnick about the event:
Please be advised we will have a dinner/meeting on Thursday, 15 November, to welcome William Russell to Johnstown. As you all know Lieutenant Colonel Russell is challenging john murtha in Pennsylvania's 12th Congressional District.
The dinner/meeting will be held at the City View restaurant in Johnstown at the top of Johnstown's historic Incline Plane. The address of the restaurant is 709 Edgehill Drive, Johnstown, PA 15905 and is in the Westmont section of town. The web address for the restaurant is www.inclinedplane.com/restaurant
We will have dinner at 6:00 and the meeting will start at approximately 7:15.
You can RSVP to Craig Minnick at: Iraqveteran220@cs.com. If you don't go to anymore political events from now to the election, please don't miss this one.
